Toronto Young People’s Theatre Offers Special Programming in the Event of TDSB Elementary Teachers STrike

December 5th, 2012

Toronto families concerned about arranging last-minute child care in the event of Toronto District School Board (TDSB) strike action need worry no longer as Young People’s Theatre has created special arts education programming to address those needs: Pop-up Drama School Workshops.

YPT will run workshop programs for grades JK to 6 at the theatre and at the nearby St. Lawrence Community Centre. In the event of an elementary school strike, workshops will coincide with the date announced for the TDSB’s job action.

$30 all-day “pop-up” workshops in the event of TDSB strike days

Modeled on YPT’s season theme, “I Hope, I Dream, I Wish” and tied to the Mainstage show, Cinderella (a RATical retelling), the Pop up Drama School Workshops will focus on family dynamics, realizing potential and self-worth, storytelling and points of view. Cinderella (a RATical retelling) exemplifies these themes and  connects to the character education tenets of Co-operation, Empathy, Kindness & Caring, Integrity and Teamwork. Led by professional artist-educators, and with specific curriculum expectations in place, YPT’s fun and creative workshops are designed to explore these themes and to enhance students’ understanding and enjoyment of Cinderella (a RATical retelling). As part of the programming, students will see either a morning or afternoon performance of the show.

Workshops for kids aged JK through grade 6

The full-day workshop and show package will run from 9:00am to 3:30pm on the TDSB strike day and is being offered at the special price of $30 per student. The regular cost of a workshop of this kind is $72 and the show ticket an additional $15, so this package has been discounted by 65% to make it as accessible as possible for families in these challenging times.

About Cinderella (a RATical retelling): The true story of Cinderella has never been told before… at least according to her friends – five rats named Ears, Teeth, Claws, Tail and Whiskers. As the rats tell the story in their own unique way, we discover that it takes hard work to make wishes come true for maybe Princesses, reluctant Princes, selfish sisters and wistful rats! A fun-filled romp with witty songs and inventive storytelling, Cinderella (a RATical retelling) is running on YPT’s Mainstage until December 30th.

Programming to be confirmed if/when the TDSB strike date is announced.
