Star Wars Art Book for Crafty Kids

June 7th, 2013

The ingenious Star Wars Thumb Doodles book is a cartooning kit that teaches kids to turn thumbprints into Star Wars characters. The kit comes with four ink pads (attached to the side of the book) for juicy thumbprints , a black marker, and a dual-tipped pencil to add some flair.

The detailed book has step-by-step instructions on blank pages where kids can practice their technique, and some printed pages too (depicting say, an Ewok village or Jabba the Hut’s place), where they can recreate movie moments. The spiral bound book is sturdy, the thumbprinting is fun, the instructions are very, very good – allowing most kids to come out with something neatly resembling their favourite intergalactic hero (or anti-hero). It’s a good, artful introduction to drawing – and encourages kids to try different techniques and think about what features define a character’s visual identity. And it’s kind of messy, which is fun too. Klutz Star Wars Thumb Doodles, Scholastic Canada, $18.99
