How to Make Play Dough for Kids

This simple playdough recipe is easy to make and stays soft and pliable for a long time. It’s not toxic (which is a good thing, because kids seem to love to eat it) and can be coloured any way you like. After preparation, store it in an airtight container or a plastic sandwich bag.

Play Dough Recipe

  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 Tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • Several drops of food colouring


  1. Combine dry ingredients in a pot.
  2. Add wet ingredients.  Mix well.
  3. Heat on medium flame for 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly, until dough begins to pull together into a sticky ball.
  4. “Cook” until most of the “looseness” has gone and the dough is the consistency of thick cookie dough.

Handle with care. The play dough will be hot
